All About Perspective

"Beauty is in the eye of the beholder"

Back in high school, girls would write random quotes in their books and notepads and this was one of them. I used to cringe at these haha. But to think of it, this quote is quite meaningful.

In my opinion, this quote means to say that beauty is subjective and that one's thoughts on beauty is independent of others'. A person can be very beautiful, but because of certain reasons that hinder one from liking her, she may seem unattractive. On the other hand, a painting could seem only as a mess of scribbles and lines but to few, could possibly be a graphical interpretation of life.

Beauty, or in a more general taking, art, is so far in the subjectivity continuum in tok, (this task is in the tok section after all), it's largely open to interpretation and differs according to perspective. On a larger scale, perspective itself differs according to geographical and cultural relativism, all in which varies greatly from one person to another. So before I sound more like a geek, I guess what I'm trying to say here is that no two people could possibly have the same preference. Even if they do, the details would never be exact. For example, if Aisyah and Ayizz both think Zafry is handsome, they might not share the same reasons as to why they say so. Maybe Aisyah likes Zafry for his eyes and Ayizz for his smile. Beauty is never-ending. 💅

Sadly, society has been trying to objectify beauty with certain standards. Long hair, plump lips, fair skin and the likes are all deemed beautiful. The rest however, are unfortunately shunned, and this is what people are striving for in status quo. I'm not excluded from this. I feel very insecure about my sunburn since it's so obvious its 20 shades darker than my original skin colour huhu. 😪 But I guess how I got my sunburn made it worth it. Ok I'm diverting from the topic again.

Today in class, we were reading each other's blogs and talking about our sunburns (mostly me and Zafry). I told Aisyah that if I went inside the staff room, the teachers would probably not even notice me and just see a dark shadow passing by their desks cos you know, sunburn. I was also taking pictures on my phone earlier on and Minin kept saying he looked fat, which he doesn't really. In discussing about beauty, I guess that besides preference, everyone has their insecurities too. And although no one can actually convince you that you are beautiful, I think it's important to accept how you look like because it's you who have to live with yourself after all. (Note to self and my sunburn lol).

So I'd like to make a tribute to the beautiful people of S16A. Despite all our insecurities and mood swings (really bad really frequent ones), in the end, we're still the same people we look forward to share stories to. You guys could be mutilated and I'd still have roti madu tampal with you guys at Halim's 😙

Ya okay Ayizz you look pretty cool in those shades *eye roll* and no that shirt doesn't make you look fat. In fact, you look really nice in soft colours. It actually makes you look sweet. 💙 

All in all, pretty things depend on how you see it. Whats nice to you may not be nice to your friend, and there's nothing wrong with that. Oh and to the people of the other class who are reading this, you guys are beautiful too 😊
