Good Ol' Joseph

Hi guys!! So now we're going deeper into the novel and are focusing on character analysis at the moment. For this task, I've chosen to study on Joseph's character when he's grown up. I find Joseph's character very interesting. Even though his emotions aren't really explained but I can somehow empathise him hahaha. Basically, Joseph Edelstein is Rose's brother who also happens to be a very mysterious science whiz. So.....  here are a few character traits on Joseph :)

1. A loner

"... Joseph smiled at no one ..." (page 45)

This is probably the main trait of Joseph's character as he always wants to be alone. Explains why George is the only friend he has right? Joseph also wanted to move out from his house right after he had finished high school and insisted on living alone in his apartment. Maybe that's why he has the ability to change into furniture - because it suits his personality that wants to get away from everything including his family 😓  . As Joseph grew up, he'd been using his special powers more frequently until he made a decision to not transform into 'Joseph' again. Besides, Joseph apparently doesn't smile or interact with people that much, so this trait of Joseph can be seen through his actions and also appearance.

2. Secretive

"He is secretive, but that isn't necessarily a bad thing." (page 148)

The next character trait of Joseph is secretive. Well, I guess this isn't something weird for a loner like him. He didn't tell ANYONE about his secret ability except Rose which he didn't actually tell her anyway. But probably he can't help being that way when everyone around him is like that as well. Even though they're a family but everyone has their own darkest secrets. This trait of his is shown by his actions and also comments by other characters.

3. A genius

"... he's as smart as any of these guys here, ..." (page 285)

Joseph was always known as a genius to everyone. Joseph and George will always spend time together figuring out the answers to the physics questions that they copied from the library. However, by the end of high school, all of Joseph's applications to top universities got rejected and he ended up going to Los Angeles City School (LACC). Joseph still did well at his new school and studied all the time. I also think that his cleverness helped with his special powers. What do you guys think? 😁

4. Caring towards his mother

"He called every day, so if he was still disappearing, he did it on an effective schedule." (page 389)

Joseph may seem like someone who doesn't have feelings but apparently he does! hahaha. After he had moved out into his own apartment, Joseph still called his mom everyday as he promised. He also kept up with the splinter puling on Sunday nights. So it seems like he does have a soft spot - for his mom! I find this really sweet of him, I mean even though he doesn't really engage with his family, he still puts some effort in showing his love towards him mom. 😍😍

So these are a few of the 'old' Joseph's traits that I managed to find in the novel. His secretive and mysterious character really brings the story to life because I can really relate myself to his situation. 😭😭😭  Till we meet again in my next entry. Bye!
