Lane Edelstein - OLD

Hye! Bee is here. So, today I would like to share with all of you about the character traits of old Lane Edelstein who is Rose's mother. πŸ‘¨πŸ‘©πŸ‘¦πŸ‘§

There are a few character traits of Lane that I found from this novel which is The Particular Sadness of Lemon Cake after she got married with Paul Edelstein.

The first character trait that I found is the old Lane Edelstein is determined. Even though Lane already left her job for few years, but lastly she decided to start a new job. She stays at the studio to learn the tools because she want to make sure that she can use it at the other time. Lane also told her family about the new knowledge that she got from the learning sessions. This is based on comments by Rose which is, "She told us everything about the carpentry co-op, which had managed to hold and even extend her interest; her skills had advanced fast in four years, and she talk about..." on page 96 (old version).

Old Lane Edelstein also show her lovely character toward her family. She always do some action such as hugging to show her love. Besides, she always take care of family from her daughter to son and to her husband. This trait can be found from her own action which is she pulled Rose in for a hello hug, pressing her daughter close to Rose favorite apron. Lane also kept good photo albums of the family, up to date and show the photos to Rose.

Next, Lane is described as skillful. She always cooks some nice food and bakes cakes for her family. One of the examples is Lane baked a Lemon Cake to celebrate Rose's nine-year-old birthday. However, event though her foods were very delicious for Joseph and Paul but it was something for Rose. Through the food, Rose got to know that Lane is empty, guilty and some romance senses.

How can the sense of romance, feeling of empty and guilty can be found in the food? πŸ˜’πŸ˜’

Lastly, I would say that the old Lane Edelstein is a disloyal wife. Even though Lane already has a happy family but just because of the feeling of empty, she choose to betray Paul Edelstein. She has a lover named Larry who is a co-op president secretly. However, her actions was examined by Rose such as Lane is shifting in her chair, and no one who had any listening skills could've mistaken the glimpse of pride in her voice (page 97). After a few years, Lane get to know that actually Rose knew everything about her and what she did behind of her family when Rose told her about it.

Si, that's all from me. See you next time.πŸ’•

  1. Bee, I was wondering why didn't Lane tell the truth to Paul about her feelings? If she was worried that it would affect her children, Rose already know and was okay with it.

    1. HI AYIZZ!! Even though Rose already know about Larry, but Joseph do not. So, as a responsible mother, Lane must keep it as a secret but maybe she needs to tell the truth only to Paul.

  2. Hi Bee. Why do you think Lane is so attached to Joe? I know she looks for signs a lot, so how does inexpressive, introverted Joe hold a significance for her? This has been bothering me for quite some time now, so I hope you can help me out with this. Love the write-up btw!
