the young GEORGE

Hello, everyone! Welcome back again to the new blog entry. So, today I'm going to talk more specifically about the character in the novel The Particular Sadness of Lemon Cake which is the young George Malcolm.

George somehow is the one and only friend that Joseph has. They seems to have the same interest in Science. From the first chapter, page 31, Rose described George as half white, half black with tousled hair, rumpled and tugged between kind of curly and extremely curly. I try to search in the internet a picture that might resemble George and I think this is the most accurate one.

maybe too young, but who cares he's too adorable! 😍
As usual a character must have a few traits to make the character looks appealing and interesting in the novel. So, here are some traits of the young George Malcolm :

Knowledgeable
  • In page 32, it is described that George was a legend. He was so natural at physics and managed to do a preview of the basics of relativity really fast, for the class. (comments by other characters)
  • In page 56, Joseph was hesitant towards the way George used to solve a mathematics question which is way quicker. (words)
Generous
  • In page 32 again, George had used the money that the teacher gave him as a reward for the clarity of mind to treat the class with pizzas. (comments by other characters & action)
Gentle
  • George held the door open for Rose is told in page 61. (action)
  • In page 67, Rose took George's hand every time to cross the road and he held back with fingers warm and firm. Sometimes, he forgot to Rose's hand at the sidewalk. (action)
Protective
  • George came over to Rose's school just to check on her as Joe told him to come by and see Lily. He also asked a few things to Rose like "No bullies in the hallways?" and "Any boys giving you trouble?" (words)
Loyal
  • When Rose asked George, "Will you still be his friend?", on the day of Joseph's disappearance. He replied. "What's with you, Joe and I will always be friends." This can be found in page 147 & 148. (words & thought and feelings)
